Mark Zuckerberg: Businessman, Cultural Icon, and now … Philanthropist?!
It was announced this morning that Mark Zuckerberg, Current CEO and Founder of Facebook (you may have heard of it), announced that he has personally donated $500 million in stocks to charity.
More specifically, Zuckerberg donated 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The group helps individuals create philanthropy programs and achieve specific charitable goals for an individual or a company.
This is Zuckerberg’s largest donation to date. In 2010, he pledged $100 million in Facebook stock to the Newark, New Jersey, public school system. This was announced a year prior to his company going public.
This half-a-billion dollar contribution is due to Zuckerberg and his wife joining Giving Pledge, an organization started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to get the countries richest citizens to donate a majority of their wealth.
When men as powerful as Zuckerberg and Gates give back so much, it restores some of your faith in humanity and gives you some hope for the future.
So Question:
What would you do if you made as much money as Zuckerberg or Gates?
