Where Does “Butthurt” Come From?

The phrase “butthurt,” while incredibly hilarious when used and an example of the pinnacle of highbrow comedy, originates almost exactly how you think it does.

But no saying lasts forever as the phrases “groovy,” “as if,” and “6 out of 8 doctors prefer Camel cigarettes” will show you. What remains to be seen, is what new saying will step up into the giant, gaping, bruised hole that “butthurt” will inevitably leave behind when it loses its relevance like Flavor Flav has now done twice.

I’ve come up with a few options that may catch your favor:

Down voted(adj.) – the way you feel as if your latest post on reddit (which you were SURE was going to be well received this time) is pummeled to the bottom of the new queue and lowers your overall karma.

  • Example: “I know I said I didn’t want to see that picture of your cat, but you don’t have to be all down voted about it.”
  • Origin: Reddit

Yesterday’s Haircut(adj.) – the disappointment that washes over you when you realize that you waited too long to get that cool new hairstyle you saw everyone else sporting and now they’re wearing it up in the front leaving you to grow out that dumb buzz cut.

  • Example: “Did you see Ross moping around after he saw that no one was wearing plaid shirts anymore? He was so yesterday’s haircut!”
  • Origin: Ross’ 8th grade haircut

Call Ohio(verb) – the act of letting something go that you staunchly believe to be true in order to regain composure and not make a fool out of yourself on Fox News insisting that it’s too early to call Ohio.

  • Example: “You’re wrong, Josh Gad WAS in the original Broadway cast of The Book of Mormon. Call Ohio, already.”
  • Origin: Karl Rove

Mammogrammed(adj.) taking my knowledge from the conversation Lee Newton and Meg Turney were having about the horrifying process of getting a mammogram: feeling as if your breasts are being flattened like a pancake to the point of being certain they are going to pop. Boy, it’s been an interesting first couple of days here at the SourceFed offices.

  • Example: “No, I didn’t take your Coke Zero, Lee. Stop making that face and quit being so mammogrammed.”
  • Origin: Lee and Meg’s lady bits (side note: Much respect, ladies. If I had to have this done once a year, I’d quit)
