Nerd Porn: Dead Space 3, Electric Cars, and Superheroes

It’s going to be a brand new year, and 2013 is already looking to be an up and down year.

Starting things off is news on the upcoming survival horror Dead Space 3. As mentioned before, the demo for the exciting will be dropping in just 23 days. In a recent interview reported by KotakuDS3 executive producter Steve Papoutsis has revealed a new little added bonus if you happen to have the Kinect hooked up to your gaming system.

“We actually have some commands that people will need to figure out, but there are commands where you might be in a certain situation and you might yell a specific expletive and it might behave in a way that you want it to.”

So if you’re the type to curse the gods while playing DS3, or scream when something frightens the poop out of you it might result in something that will benefit you while you’re playing.

Kinect can also be used in the game’s co-op mode, where you can give basic commands for simple actions like sharing ammunition. Some of the actions can be a little more on the devious side, so it’s best to play with someone who’d rather help you than hinder you.

Next, we have the state of Washington telling hybrid and electric car owners to suck it … kind of. Jalopnik reported that a new law has passed that requires electric/hybrid car owners to pay an additional $100 towards their vehicle registration annually.

This new tax is to help compensate for the gasoline tax that these drivers no longer have to pay. The Seattle Times reported:

Washington’s gas tax stands at 37.5 cents per gallon and is the state’s largest source of transportation dollars. It costs the average motorist, driving roughly 12,000 miles in a vehicle that gets 23 mpg, about $200 a year.

In that sense, this tax is somewhat understandable, however it does not follow the government’s usual behavior when it comes to eco-friendly drivers. In the past, drivers have been given huge incentives for driving ‘green,’ and now with this tax and the low number of electric car owners, I feel as if this tax will hurt more than it will help.

Finally, PIXAR animator Everett Downing had one of the most interesting and creative New Year’s resolutions I have ever heard. Three years ago, he had the idea of making a brand new superhero for everyday of the year. Although it did not quite workout in the way he planned, he still produced some incredible artwork. Below are some of Steve’s personal favorites and to see the whole gallery check out Downing’s Blogspot.
