On Sunday, September 23rd, the Iranian television network announced that Google and Gmail would be blocked until further notice. Evetually, the government is going to put all its citizens onto a “domestic internet network.” Basically, the Iranian government is slowly banning the use of the Internet completely!
The Iranian government has not been able to come up with a clear reason as to why they are removing the Internet from Iran, but a few topics have repeated many times.
- Firstly, They believe control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries. (HYPOCRITICAL)
- They want to protect themselves from hackers, due to the virus that attacked their nuclear plants.
- Finally, they want to protect against outside influences such as “Innocence of Islam” from causing future riots and social unrest.
By March 2013, the Iranian Government plans to have all its citizens on its personal internet network, completely disconnected from the world wide web.
Question Time:
How would you react if your government were to limit you access to the Internet or take it down all together?
