Roughly 1000 cats were rescued off the side of a highway in China.
The adorable animals were on their way to Changsha, the capital city of China’s Hunan province, to be slaughtered and eaten.
The rescued cats were being transported by truck and were then abandoned by the driver near Changsha. The driver had to abandon the truck because serving cats is illegal and the traffic was atrocious.
When found by animal rights activists, a call went out on the social network Weibo for volunteers. Hundreds of volunteers arrived to assist with the rescue of the precious kittens.
The cats were packed into 40 crates, about 25 per crate. Some cats unfortunately did not make it, but the rest of the little buggers went home with volunteers or went to the Changsha Small Animal Protection Association.

The rich and well-off citizens of China have ‘a renewed interest’ in eating cats.
