Austerity measures be damned, there’s one part of the private sector that’s still going strong.
For this post, I’m going to make a commitment: No puns. I promise.
The amateur soccer team Voukefalas has come onto hard times had some money troubles. Times are tough in Greece, so to keep things going, you’ve got to find sponsors where you can.
Enter Cue Soula Alevridou. She’s the 69 67-year old madam of Soula’s House of History, one of the brothels that is now supporting the team.
For the record: Prostitution is legal in Greece.
The club’s virile young chairman, Yiannis Batzolias, is simultaneously in charge of the club, the barebackup goalie, and in charge of a travel agency, which I didn’t even know still existed. “Unfortunately, amateur football has been abandoned by almost everyone,” he says.
The Voukefalas team’s losing streak has extended grown bulged erected increased in recent days, but Soula has offered some incentives if they win. You can probably guess what those incentives are.
No word if only the goalie gets in the box should they win.
For her part, Soula seems to be also taking one more than a sponsorship role. “There’s a lot still missing. We have no midfield,” she says, laying out the problems with the team she just invested in. “Here is where it all begins, with amateur sport. It’s where the talent is bred.”
As we all know, talent’s got to start amateur somewhere.
Question: How annoyed were you that I kept calling it soccer and not football?
