I cannot stand clowns. I understand their utility, I’m sure plenty of people get a lot of joy out of clowns, but they’re not for me. So when I say clowns do something awesome, you’d do well to listen. And it’s a doozy: Clowns decide to crash a Neo-Nazi rally and just ruin their day.
So, a group of Neo-Nazis decide to meet up in North Carolina and have themselves a rally. There were about fifty supporters, which, well, okay. They called themselves the National Socialist Movement (NSM), and they were supposed to be talking about immigration, or rather, their hatred of having immigrants in this country that is wholly comprised of non-indigenous people.
(Well, we’ve got the Natives, but we kinda, y’know, almost exterminated them.)
Photographer Yash Mori was at the event. They look like this:
Anyway, they were out in Charlotte, which, having been there for the DNC, I am totally not surprised, but then someone decided to crash the party.
Who crashed it? A whole bunch of clowns, that’s who. They were apart of the Latin American Coalicion and brought well over a hundred folks dressed in clown makeup with as many noise makers as they possibly could. They would honk, chortle, and other noise-adjectives at the rally.
And the clowns looked like this:
Whenever someone would say “white power,” the clowns would throw white flour in the air. That was a nice touch. I enjoy that.
Lacey Williams, the youth coordinator for the jokesters, pretty much summed it up nicely:
The message from us is, you look silly. We’re dressed like clowns and you’re the ones that look funny.
Which, yeah, that’s a good response. The NSM is one of the largest Neo-Nazi groups in these United States, and they are known for their theatrical protests. Looks like they got completely routed. Observers noted that at times the NSM was outnumbered 5-to-1 in the protest.
Question: Good way to counter-protest, hollow gesture? Or just wasting everyone’s time?
